Annmarie's Story

SDTR participant Annmarie

My daughter, Annmarie is not able to actively participate in recreational sports as her siblings do, so when she had the opportunity to ride horses, her face just lit up! She loves to ride and loves going to see all of the wonderful volunteers! Prior to riding, she had to sit in her wheelchair to watch her brother's football games. Since she began riding, Annmarie is now able to sit on the bleacher without assistance! That makes her feel so proud! Horseback riding has improved her torso strength so much that she stands up straighter, as well. This program is so amazing, and the wonderful volunteers that spend countless hours every week are so awesome!! I would recommend this program 100%!

These kids and adults...

come from many family backgrounds, with a wide variety of skills and challenges. Some are outgoing and talkative while others are not -- at least, not yet! But one thing that unites them is the joy they take in working with SDTR's therapy horses, instructor and volunteers. Whether interacting with a horse on the ground or riding in the ring, they appreciate the gentle warmth of these large animals and find it exciting and stimulating to learn to control them through riding skills. As their comfort on the horse increases, they are able to build strength, balance and flexibility by playing a variety of games on horseback. Some ride independently and even compete in horse shows! The instructors and volunteers create a safe and fun environment and there is always lots of laughter! If you or someone you know might want to join this fun-loving group
